How to Tie Your Gi Pants (Just In case....)
Caring For Your Gi!!
Washing Instructions:
To extend the life of your Gracie Gi, Gracie recommends that you wash it in cold water. Cold water lifts stains from sweat and blood, while warm / hot water actually sets them into the material. Use a low heat cycle to dry your Gi (high heat will cause excessive shrinking). Although the Gis were designed and manufactured for constant use, proper maintenance is required to ensure maximum lifespan.
Dyed Products:
To set the color in dyed cotton products, and to help prevent fading, place them in enough water to completely cover the material. Then add 1/2 cup of clear vinegar for every 2-3 gallons of water, and a couple of tablespoons of salt, and let it soak for about an hour. To finish, flush the material thoroughly in a couple of wash cycles before wearing.
Shrinking Your New Gi:
A new Gi can shrink up to five inches if it is too large. Simply wash your new Gi in hot water and dry it on high heat one time and it will typically shrink 2-3 inches. You can repeat the process up to three times for additional shrinkage of 1-2 inches each time. Once you are satisified with the sizing, switch to washing in cold water and drying on a low heat cycle.
Additional Tips:
– Never use bleach! Bleach eats cotton fibers and will reduce the lifespan of your Gi. To remove stains, use an organic oxidizer like Oxyclean.
– After training, do not let your soiled Gi sit. By washing your Gi within 6 hours of training, you will prevent stains, mildew, and mold from setting into the fibers.
– Never wash your belt!
Should I Wear An Athletic (Groin) Cup?
First, it’s a matter of personal choice. But in our view, there are compelling reasons to opt for an alternative to a cup / groin protector
- Most BJJ competitions do not allow their use due to the higher probability of injury to both the wearer and their opponents
- They provide a “fulcrum” that can amplify the effectiveness of armbars and other techniques that can injure your partner
- They significantly change your mobility and the dynamics of numerous jiu-jitsu positions and can actually inhibit your ability to achieve certain positions
- There is a high possibility of self-injury as you execute techniques that require significant hip and leg mobility
- They are designed for use in high-contact / striking sports & those where equipment might strike the groin and as-such don’t move the way a male Jiujiteiro moves
So What Should I Wear?
Good alternatives to a cup include tight fitting brief style undergarments, athletic supporters without a cup, and compression shorts from Summo, Under Armor or Nike.
Also, there are times when you may feel the need to wear a cup – for example after an inury. In those cases consult your doctor on suggestions and consider use of a “soft” protector like the Shock Doctor Aircore Cup https://www.shockdoctor.com/products/aircore-soft-cup
